REPLICA OF A VICTORIAN 'SNAKESTONE'

Whitby, Yorkshire

According to legend, a curse was placed upon a plague of snakes at Whitby by the Abbess St.Hilda, whereupon the snakes coiled up, died and were petrified.

As the 'snakes' were never found intact, local craftsmen took advantage of the legend by carving heads at the end of the last whorl and selling them to tourists.

This is a replica of an original Victorian 'snakestone'.

The 'snakes' are Jurassic ammonites from the Lower Lias clay in the cliffs at Whitby and 190 million years old.
