POLYURETHANE FOAM REPLICA
OF A MAGNIFICENT COMPLETE ICHTHYOSAUR

From an original museum specimen

Stenopterygius quadriscissus

180 million years old

Upper Lias
Holzmaden, Germany

A cast of one of the many beautifully preserved fossils of the ichthyosaur Stenopterygius that have been found at the classic site of Holzmaden. It is a very impressive exhibition item, showing all the detail of the individual bones.

It's not natural colours but the brown and cream coloration of this replica is perfect to emphasise the individual bones. It is also very lightweight making it ideal for transport and display. If wall-hanging it is advisable to screw a narrow strip of wood to the back to prevent the possibility of it slightly warping in the fluctuating temperature of a room. The polyurethane foam will accept wood screws.

Stenopterygius was similar in appearance to the better known Ichthyosaurus but had a smaller skull and narrower flippers. Its skull had a very large number of teeth. Like all ichthyosaurs, the eyes were very large, probably for deep diving. The vertebral column continued into the lower lobe of a large, vertical, semi-circular tail fin. This powerful tail fin enabled Stenopterygius to be a very fast swimmer. Like the other soft parts, the tail fin has not been preserved.

Ichthyosaurs were air-breathing reptiles, bore live young, and were probably warm-blooded. They spent most of their life in the open sea, hunting fish, ammonites and belemnites.

This replica was produced by Stuart Baldwin's company Educational Palaeontological Reproductions in the 1990s. It's an unused item but it is slightly marked in places having been in storage for many years.
