RARE 'AXE-HEAD' TWINNED
CALCITE CRYSTAL

Moor Farm Quarry, Bonsall Moor, Matlock, Derbyshire

A very rare, so called 'Axe-Head' twinned crystal of calcite from Derbyshire. The crystal is lustrous and almost transparent.

A small number of these twinned crystals were found in a single, clay-lined cavity in Carboniferous limestone in Moor Farm Quarry in 1981. Such crystals have not been found anywhere else and the quarry is now disused and overgrown.

This specimen is from an old collection. it is a good example but slightly bruised on one edge (see photo).
