QUARTZ GEODE
('COCONUT' GEODE)

Las Choyas Geode Mine, Chihuahua, Mexico

Geodes are hollow rocks lined with crystals of various minerals and one of the world's largest and most famous deposits of geodes occurs at Las Choyas in Mexico.

The geodes were originally cavities in rhyolite volcanic lava (also called ash flow tuff) deposited during the Eocene period about 40 million years ago.  The cavities were subsequently infilled with quartz by percolating groundwater which takes the form of agate and/or sparkling crystals.

The geodes are mined underground and are very attractive and highly prized. They are mostly spherical and either cracked open or cut and polished.

This example has been simply cracked open and has a centre lined with quartz crystals. They are often called coconut geodes due to their size and shape.

A four-pronged acrylic stand is included.
