QUARTZ CRYSTALS

Calton Hill Quarry, Buxton, Derbyshire

Sparkling crystals of quartz (rock crystal) from the classic locality of Calton Hill Quarry in Derbyshire.

The Calton Hill area was the site of a volcano during early Carboniferous times, some 330 million years ago, and the basalt lava here has been quarried for roadstone. The lavas contain cavities lined with crystals of various minerals, particularly quartz.

This is a lovely specimen from a classic locality. It is from an old collection. It was collected in 1973 when the quarry was working.
