On the north coast of Sheppey the London Clay cliffs contain large ‘septarian nodules’, which contain cracks lined with calcite. Very rarely the calcite is covered with tiny but beautiful and perfectly-formed crystals of pyrite (fools gold), usually associated with fossilised wood. on calcite
Isle of Sheppey, Kent
This is a very good example of pyrite from this classic locality. On one side of this specimen the pyrite is in a botryoidal crystal form (see photo). Use of a hand lens is recommended to see the beauty of the crystals.
A fragment of fossil wood (about 50 million years old) can be seen on the underside of this specimen.
