PURPLE FLUORITE CRYSTALS

Frazer's Hush Mine, Weardale, County Durham

Purple fluorite crystals on white quartz, which in turn sits on green fluorite (visible at the back).

Some of the fluorite crystals have frosted centres which appear as cream-coloured patches. There is also some minor bruising to some crystals, but otherwise this is a good specimen.

The Frazer's Hush Mine was established in the early 1970's and was operated by various companies until it finally closed in 1999. During the late 1980's to early 1990's the mine produced numerous specimens of twinned purple fluorite crystals, together with quartz and galena.

Weardale fluorite is highly fluorescent under long wave ultraviolet light and also has daylight fluoresecence (see photo).
