'PURBECK MARBLE’

A beach cobble of Jurassic limestone packed with fossil shells

145 million years old

Isle of Purbeck, Dorset

Purbeck marble is composed mostly of fossil gastropod shells which are in layers in the positions where the came to rest on the ancient sea floor.

Although not technically a true marble in the geological sense (true marbles are recrystallised by heat and pressure), it takes a beautiful polish and has been highly prized for centuries and used in churches and cathedrals all over the World.
