Purbeck marble is composed mostly of fossil gastropod shells which are in layers in the positions where the came to rest on the ancient sea floor.
Although not technically a true marble in the geological sense (true marbles are recrystallised by heat and pressure), it takes a beautiful polish and has been highly prized for centuries and used in churches and cathedrals all over the World.
