The rock that floats!
Pumice is the World’s lightest rock and is the only rock that floats on water. It is usually formed by rapid cooling and depressurisation of magma during an eruption.
The depressurisation causes gas bubbles to form, just like the bubbles of CO2 that appear when a bottle of carbonated drink is opened. Pumice could be described as a ‘lava froth’.
Pumice commonly forms when lava reacts with sea water and huge quantities are often seen floating on the sea surface near active volcanoes.
