Fossil tooth of a pterosaur from rocks dating from the Cretaceous period in Morocco.
Pterosaurs (from the Greek meaning ‘wing lizard’) were flying reptiles that existed during most of the time of the dinosaurs and are the earliest vertebrates known to have evolved powered flight.
Their wings were formed by a membrane of skin, muscle and other tissue, stretching from the ankles to a dramatically lengthened fourth finger.
