« backPORPHYRY BASALT
Cut and polished slice
Hunan Province, China
Conspicuous crystals of feldspar in basaltic lava. The crystals formed as molten rock cooled slowly in a magma chamber. Rocks like this that have large crystals in a groundmass of very small crystals are called porphyries, and the adjective porphyritic is used to describe them.
In some varieties of this rock the feldspar crystals are long and thin, and their distribution in the rock resembles Chinese characters. It is known as Chinese writing stone.
This is a lovely decorative slice, polished on all sides. Presented in a lidded gift box.
