PORFIDO VERDE ANTICO

Polished sample of this classic and beautiful decorative stone
Porphido verde antico is one of the classic stones of ancient times. It is a volcanic rock of a rich green colour that is known as a porphyry. It has been worked for thousands of years but it was especially popular with the Romans in the first century AD. The source was then lost and not rediscovered until the 19th century.
The paving of St. Peter's Square in the Vatican is decorated with this stone.
It is an altered porphyritic andesite or dolerite of Carboniferous to Permian age, coloured green by epidote and chlorite.
