POCKET MAGNIFIER/HAND LENS
Approx. x10 magnification
An inexpensive hand lens of very good optical quality.
A simple hand lens (also called a jewellers’ loupe) of x10 magnification is essential to see the detail of a fossil or the beauty of microscopic crystals. In fact, it is ideal for almost any branch of natural history. A hand lens with a x10 magnification is by far the most useful general-purpose lens.
Particularly recommended for observing tiny insects in amber.
HOW TO USE A HAND LENS
When people first try to use a hand lens they usually hold it at arm’s length but to get the best view you need to bring the lens right up to your eye. Decide which is your dominant eye and bring the lens as close to your eye as you can. With your other hand bring the object you want to look at closer and closer until it comes into focus. With a x10 hand lens the object will be in focus when it is about an inch from the lens. With practice this will come naturally. You don’t have to squint, keep both eyes open. If you wear glasses you may find it easier to keep them on. |
