FOSSIL LEFT-HANDED WHELK (PLIOCENE)
3 to 4 million years old
Kallo, near Antwerp, Belgium
Very fine fossil gastropod from the Pliocene deposits of Belgium. From an old collection. The base of the shell has a slight repair.
The species is Neptunea angulate (formerly Neptunea contraria) - known also as the ‘left-handed whelk’, because it spirals in the opposite direction to almost all other gastropods.
Temporary excavations for dock and other works at Kallo have produced a rich and diverse Pliocene fauna of bivalves and gastropods.
Size: approx. 10.5 x 5.5 x 4.5 centimetres
Weight: 112 grams
