PIECES OF AMBER

Thought to be from the
coast of East Anglia

40 million years old

These pieces of amber are from an old University collection. It is not known where they were collected but it is very likely that they were found on the coast of East Anglia.

Amber has been picked up on England’s east coast beaches for centuries; most of it is from Norfolk and Suffolk but occasionally it is found further north in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire and further south in Essex and even Kent.

Amber is a fossilised pine resin from ancient forests and the amber found on our east coast is identical to amber from the Baltic area that is some 40 million years old, but how it got here is not known.

Presented in a glass-topped display box.
