GOLD REEF
A sample of quartz 'reef'
from a gold mine
2.9 billion years old
Crown Gold Mine, Johannesburg,
South Africa
In the world of mining, the word 'reef' is used to describe an ancient sedimentary rock consisting mostly of quartz fragments and containing a relatively high concentration of gold. Quartz reefs in South Africa account for nearly 50% of all the gold ever mined on Earth.
This item is from an old collection. It is a typical example of a gold reef, obtained from a great depth in a Johannesburg gold mine.
Unfortunately the gold, which is in the form of minute particles, is not uniformly distributed throughout these reefs and therefore there is no guarantee that this piece contains any gold!
