PHYLLITE - Unst, Shetland
« backPHYLLITE
Belmont, Unst, Shetland
Phyllite is a metamorphic rock that is mid way between slate and schist. It is created from slate which is further metamorphosed by additional heat and pressure. It splits like slate, but unlike slate it is often crinkled with wavy surfaces.
The increases in pressure and temperature have resulted in microscopic crystals of mica and other minerals forming in the rock and aligning themselves at right angles to the direction of pressure. These crystals reflect light and give the rock an attractive satin sheen which is sometimes called 'phyllitic lustre'.
