PHOSPHATIC NODULE

With a natural polish

Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex

A remarkable and rather beautiful nodule, or concretion, from the basement bed of the Red Crag in the cliffs at The Naze. It has acquired a natural polish over millions of years but the process that produced this polish has no adequate scientific explanation.

The surface depressions were made by marine molluscs such as piddocks when the nodule was on the floor of the Red Crag Sea, about 3 million years ago.

The nodule was collected in the 1970s and is from an old collection. It's a lovely thing that sits comfortably in the palm of the hand.
