‘PELE’S HAIR’
Natural fibres of volcanic glass
October 1980 eruption of Krafla, near Myvatn, Iceland
Small sample in a glass-topped box.
Named after the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, these golden strands are actually thin filaments of volcanic glass. They are formed when droplets of molten rock are ejected from a volcano and spun out by the wind into hair-like strands.
Please note: This sample should be kept in the box. Like man-made fiberglass It is not recommended to touch Pele's hair, because it is brittle and sharp. Always wear gloves if handling.
