PELE’S HAIR’
Natural fibres of volcanic glass

From the October 1980 eruption of Krafla, near Myvatn, Iceland

Named after the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, these golden strands are actually thin filaments of volcanic glass.  They are formed when droplets of molten rock are ejected from a volcano and spun out by the wind into hair-like strands.

Krafla is a volcanic caldera in north Iceland with 29 eruptions in recorded history. The most recent series of eruptions occurred between 1975 and 1984.

This sample is from an old collection. It was collected 10 months after the eruption and may contain tiny pieces of plant material, also carried by the wind. Presented in a plastic box.

Please note: The sample should be kept in the box. Like man-made fibreglass it is not recommended to touch Pele's hair, because it is brittle and sharp.
