BIOTITE MICA, FELDSPAR
AND QUARTZ
Evje, Aust-Agder Region, Norway
A good specimen of black biotite mica with feldspar and quartz from a course-grained igneous rock known as a pegmatite.
Mica is a remarkable mineral. Due to weaknesses between the layers of atoms it splits easily in one direction - a property known as cleavage - and continued splitting creates thin, flexible sheets. The black variety is called biotite.
