'PEACOCK ORE' (CHALCOPYRITE)

Mexico

Chalcopyrite and bornite are both copper and iron sulphides but with different proportions of copper, iron and sulphur. They are both a brassy yellow colour and are important ores of copper.

Bornite tarnishes on exposure to oxygen in the air creating an extremely thin oxidised surface layer of brilliant colours and has therefore been called ‘peacock ore’. Chalcopyrite also tarnishes but this has been speeded up by treating with dilute acid.

Small pieces of peacock ore are commonly available at mineral fairs and crystal shops but this is a large and impressive specimen.
