PART OF A MAMMOTH TUSK

Hungary

A piece of the outer surface of a mammoth tusk from Hungary. It is water-worn and was recovered from ancient river gravel.

The mammoth fossils from Hungary are largely found in river terrace gravels in the valley of the River Danube west and south of Budapest. They are from different periods of the Ice Age and represent several stages of mammoth evolution. They are from 200,000 to 800,000 years old.

A mammoth’s tusk grew continuously throughout its life. Tusks were probably used in fighting, and also in feeding.
