« back‘ONYX MARBLE’
Cut and polished slab
Chagai Mountains, West Pakistan
Pakistan’s beautiful ‘onyx marble’ is actually a rock known as travertine, composed of colourful calcite. Cut and polished slab
Chagai Mountains, West Pakistan
It was formed as a result of volcanic activity during the Miocene and Pleistocene periods (up to 10 million years ago), which caused hot springs to deposit huge quantities of travertine in this part of Pakistan and across the border into Afghanistan and Iran.
It is polished to make vases, table tops and decorative items. This particular specimen is all one colour, showing no banding. It is polished on one side only.
