The remarkable pyrite crystals from Navajún, Spain are unique in the world. Some are perfect cubes with mirror-like faces and it is difficult to believe that they have been formed naturally.
The crystals occur in marlstone laid down on the sea floor during the Jurassic period and were formed when these rocks were deeply buried and subjected to heat and pressure.
This particular example consists of a single, almost perfect cube still partly embedded in the rock in which it was found.
