NATIVE GOLD
Natural nugget of gold
Hill End, New South Wales, Australia
The town of Hill End in New South Wales owes its existence to a gold rush which started in the 1850s and reached its peak in the 1870s. Small quantities of gold are still found in the area and gold panning is popular.
Gold occurring naturally is known as 'native' gold. A 'native' element is an element in its pure state and not combined with other elements. Other examples are native copper and native sulphur.
