An impressively heavy mass of native copper with white calcite. It is almost solid copper and weighs over 2.5 kilograms. It will sit nicely upright on a shelf without the need of a stand.
'Native' copper is copper that is not combined with any other chemical elements, in other words it is almost pure copper that occurs naturally. Copper is one of only a few metallic elements that occur in its native form. Other examples are gold and silver. Native copper was an important source of copper in prehistoric times.
The Keweenaw Peninsula of Northern Michigan has the largest deposits of native copper on Earth. The irregular masses of copper here mostly occur in the brecciated tops of successive buried basalt lava flows that have been dated to 1,095 million years ago. Precisely how these unusual orebodies are formed is not completely understood.
