NATIVE COPPER IN ROMAN MINE PROP - Cyprus
« backSECTION OF A ROMAN MINE PROP CONTAINING NATIVE COPPER
Lefke, Northern Cyprus.
Section of a wooden mine prop from a Roman copper mine in Cyprus containing crystals of native copper. Over a long period the mine prop became infiltrated with copper-saturated mine water causing crystallisation of copper within the structure of the wood.
The wood has been cut across revealing numerous tiny patches of copper in reflected light. Visible on both sides.
Lefke was a thriving copper mining town during the Roman period.
A fascinating item!
