HOME-MADE MINERAL HARDNESS SET (SECOND-HAND)

The Mohs scale of mineral hardness is based on the ability of one mineral to scratch another. It was created in 1822 by German geologist and mineralogist Friedrich Mohs.

Mohs selected ten minerals of distinctly different hardness that ranged from a very soft mineral (talc) to a very hard mineral (diamond). However, the scale demonstrates relative and not absolute hardness; for example, corundum (9) is twice as hard as topaz (8), but diamond (10) is four times as hard as corundum.

1-Talc, 2-Gypsum (selenite), 3-Calcite, 4-Fluorite (fluorspar), 5-Apatite, 6-Orthoclase feldspar, 7-Quartz, 8-Topaz, 9-Corundum, 10-Diamond.

This is a second-hand, vintage ‘home-made’ hardness kit, containing specimens of each mineral on the scale (diamond is represented by a diamond glass cutter). This set was made for a university geology class and has been extensively used, in other words some specimens (e.g. calcite and selenite) are very scratched. But it is a curious item and the set still has some practical use.
