MILLSTONE GRIT

The debris from the wasting of Caledonia

Scoutmoor Quarry, Ramsbottom, Lancashire

The Millstone Grit is a coarse sandstone that was deposited across what is now Northern England by a vast river delta. The sand was washed down from the giant Caledonian mountain range, as high as the present-day Himalayas, which was formed as the separate tectonic plates on which England and Scotland were situated collided and welded together.

The roots of these mountains are now the mountains of eastern America, Scotland and Norway. Millstone Grit is therefore literally the debris from the erosion of Caledonia, deposited during the Carboniferous period, 320 million years ago.

Millstone Grit is technically known as a ‘gritstone’, and is so called because it was ideal for making millstones for watermills. It is still quarried today for paving and building stone. This is a sample that has been cut on all sides.
