MENILITE

A variety of opal that forms into remarkable bulbous shapes

Chichaoua, Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz Region, Morocco

Menilite is a type of opal that occurs as chalky white globular concretions.  The remarkable
contours and creases are the result of water, rich in silica, gradually filtering through pure sand.
They are often referred to as 'Goddess Stones'.

Menilite is named after Ménilmontant, a suburb of Paris, where it was first found.  It is now also known from other countries such as Japan and Spain, as well as Morocco.
