MEERSCHAUM (SEPIOLITE)

Turkey

Meerschaum, also known by its technical name sepiolite, is a hydrous magnesium silicate. It varies in colour from white to light grey and even yellow.

It is most famous for its use in making meerschaum pipes, because it is relatively soft and easily carved.  Most of the sepiolite is mined near Eskişehir in Turkey, between Istanbul and Ankara.

This specimen is from an old collection. Pieces of natural meerschaum are very rarely available for sale. Since the 1970s Turkey has had an export ban in place for natural pieces of meerschaum to encourage a local industry.

Presented in a second hand lidded box.
