MEDALLION STRUCK IN VOLCANIC LAVA FROM THE 1922 ERUPTION OF VESUVIUS, ITALY

Vesuvius was intermittently active from 1913 through to 1944. This lava 'medallion' is from the 1922 eruption.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries it was common for lava souvenirs to be produced for wealthy visitors who climbed the mountain during eruptions. But such souvenirs usually consist of coins pressed into lava. This 'medallion' is unusual.

The procedure was for a blob of molten lava to be retrieved from a lava flow with a long metal rod (presumably at some personal risk), pressed into a mould, then quenched in a bucket of water.

This souvenir has what is thought to be an image of Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882) on the obverse and an outline of Vesuvius on the reverse, with the year 1922.
