‘MARSTON MARBLE'

A remarkable limestone containing numerous Jurassic ammonites

190 million years old

Marston Magna, near Yeovil, Somerset

‘Marston marble’ is one of Britain’s rarest rocks.  It occurs in nodules which, when broken open, are seen to be crowded with small ammonites tightly packed together.  It is very attractive when cut and polished.

It was discovered over 200 years ago at the village of Marston Magna but the original site has never been located.  However, research in the last few years has led to a new excavation nearby which has revealed some more of this beautiful stone.

This is a lovely example of the stone. It has one cut and polished face.
