A conglomerate is a rock containing rounded fragments naturally cemented together. In this case the fragments consist of many different rock types and the rock is known as a polymict conglomerate.
It was formed by rapid deposition of sediment in a valley erodng ancient Precambrian rocks. The rock types present include banded ironstone, jasper, chert and quartz,
The rock is of late Palaeogene age and about 30 million years old.
