ATLAS VERTEBRA OF A WOOLLY MAMMOTH - about 20,000 years old - Dredged from the North Sea
« backATLAS VERTEBRA OF A WOOLLY MAMMOTH
About 20,000 years old
Dredged from the floor of the
North Sea, near the Dogger Bank
Fossil mammoth teeth and bones are
occasionally dredged from the floor of
the North Sea by fishing vessels and date
from a time when the North Sea was dry land.
This is a fine and complete example of the
'atlas' or first neck vertebra of a mammoth.
There is only one of these bones in the entire mammoth skeleton.
There is slight damage to bone but this is to be expected on all North Sea dredged fossils.
