TOE BONE OF A
WOOLLY MAMMOTH

About 20,000 years old

Dogger Bank, North Sea

A mammoth toe bone
dredged by a fishing vessel from the Dogger Bank on the North Sea floor.

During the coldest periods of the Ice Age the North Sea was dry land and occupied by herds of large mammals.

Ice Age bones are relatively young in geological terms and not completely fossilised. This fossil has therefore been treated with a preservative.
