An attractive variety of translucent calcite from Malta
The geology of Malta is mostly limestone, used for the construction of the ancient buildings of the island. These rocks are between 25 and 5 million years old and occasionally contain fissures lined with calcite.
This attractive, banded, honey-coloured calcite is cut and polished on the island to make jewellery and decorative objects.
This piece is a translucent slice, polished on both sides.
