MAGNETITE AND GARNET SAND

Kildonan, Sutherland, Scotland

This sand contains almost entirely black magnetite and pink almandine garnets. it was panned from the Suisgill and Kildonan Burns near Helmsdale in Sutherland in the 1980s.

These burns have yielded gold to prospectors since the early nineteenth century but are famous for the 'Kildonan Gold Rush' of 1869. The burns are still panned for gold today.

Presented in a vintage glass phial with a cork stopper. The magnet is included.
