LUXULLIANITE

One of Britain’s rarest and most attractive rocks

280 million years old

Luxulyan, near St. Austell, Cornwall

Luxullianite is only found in one place in the world: the village of Luxulyan in Cornwall, after which the rock has been named. It is a very distinctive and handsome rock with a brilliant name.

Luxullianite is actually a variety of granite, with pink orthoclase feldspar crystals intermingled with black tourmaline and white quartz.

The Duke of Wellington’s sarcophagus in St. Paul’s Cathedral in London is made of luxullianite.
