LOG OF FOSSILISED WOOD FROM SAUDI ARABIA
« backFOSSILISED WOOD
250 million years old
(Permian period)
Desert east of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
A large log of fossilised wood that was once part of a tree. The wood has been completely 'petrified' - all the living tissue has been turned to quartz. It is evidence that the desert of Saudi Arabia once had a wet climate with rain forest vegetation at a time when the region was south of the equator.
This piece shows evidence of tree rings and has a natural dull polish caused by it being bombarded by sand particles carried by the desert wind over thousands of years.
Please note: This log weighs over 3.6 kilograms
Size: approx. 16 x 12 x 10 centimetres
Weight: 3.6 kilograms
