LODESTONE
(variety of magnetite)
Natural magnetic iron
These pieces of magnetite, called 'lodestone' are naturally magnetic and will pick up a paperclip. Some have iron filings attached which also demonstrates the magnetism.
Some pieces of lodestone have a natural polarity. Small suspended slivers of lodestone were used as the first form of magnetic compass.
Magnetite is a constituent of many volcanic rocks. It is also a valuable ore of iron.Click on a picture for a larger image
