Tephrite is a volcanic lava resembling basalt but with abundant minerals known as feldspathoids (nepheline or leucite). Tephrite is term of great antiquity and comes from the Greek word tephra, meaning ashes.
This example contains conspicuous leucite (white) and pyroxene (black) crystals. It was collected in 1996 from Mount Vesuvius.
