LEAD SLAG

Leadhills, South Lanarkshire, Scotland

Slag is the glass-like by-product left over after a metal has been separated from its ore.

This sample of lead slag was collected from the vicinity of the lead mines near the village of Leadhills in southern Scotland. Silver and lead have been mined at Leadhills for centuries, possibly as long ago as Roman times.

This is a curious item that would interest the collector of mining ephemera. It was collected in the 1970s and is from an old collection.
