Larimar is a rare blue variety of the mineral pectolite, found only in the Dominican Republic. Although originally found in 1916, it was rediscovered in 1974 and given the name larimar, which incorporates mar, the Spanish word for sea, due to its colour.
It occurs as radiating crystalline masses associated with volcanic lavas of Cretaceous-Eocene age.
