« backVOLCANIC BOMB
1973 eruption, Heimaey,
Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland
A large and impressive volcanic bomb. From an old collection.
When a volcano erupts it often throws out large blobs of molten lava which cool and solidify as they travel through the air. These volcanic ‘bombs’ can take a variety of forms but often acquire aerodynamic shapes by the flow of air during their flight.
The volcanic eruption on Heimaey began without warning on 23 January 1973. The eruption caused a major crisis for the island and led to its temporary evacuation. Volcanic ash fell over most of the island, destroying around 400 homes.
Size: approx. 25 x 19 x 15 centimetres
