LARGE TRANSPARENT,
CLEAVED SELENITE CRYSTAL

From the London Clay

Bean Clay Pit, near Swanscombe, Kent

The clay works at Bean, near Swanscombe, which supplied the clay for the cement works south of the Thames, was closed in 1964, but during its working life was well known to local fossil collectors.

This specimen is the end of a very large selenite crystal. It has been cleaved showing a gorgeous, lustrous cleavage plane.

A lovely specimen from a very unusual locality. The former clay pit is now Beacon Wood Country Park.
