LARGE MASS OF CALCITE CRYSTALS - Plumpton, East Sussex
« backPlumpton, East Sussex
Large mass of columnar, crystalline calcite from the Chalk of Plumpton, East Sussex. Collected from an agricultural field and from an old collection.
It is thought that these crystalline masses form in solution cavities in the Chalk and are then ploughed up to the surface. Part of the wall of the cavity can be seen at the end of the specimen, with some chalk bedrock attached.
A very attractive, interesting and unusual specimen, weighing over 1.3 kilograms. It is translucent when held up to a light.
It is also strongly fluorescent under UV light.
Size: approx. 17 x 11 x 7 centimetres
Weight: 1.33 kilograms
