FOSSIL GASTROPOD

Clavilithes macrospira

40 million years old

Barton-on-Sea, Hampshire

This beautifully preserved shell of a marine mollusc resembles a modern shell but it is a genuine fossil.  It was found in the cliffs of Barton-on-Sea in Hampshire, in clays and sands called the Barton Beds that were laid down under the sea in the Upper Eocene period when the climate was warmer than today.

The fossil is from an old collection and was collected in the 1980s.
