CRETACEOUS NAUTILUS

Beautiful cut and polished section

110 million years old (Early Albian stage)

Ambarimaniga, Madagascar

A lovely example of the fossil nautilus Cymatoceras sakalavus from Madagascar. It is cut and polished to reveal the inner chambers of the original shell.

The chambers have been infilled with crystals of the mineral calcite. On the reverse the original shell can be seen.

The nautilus is related to ammonites, but unlike ammonites it did not become extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period.
